T&F: What is the relationship between process, materiality 
and the resulting image?


D: The physical act of going to these locations, standing at the fence line of the weapons’ facilities and visiting the sites of homicides is a ritual of witness. It is a form of research that is not archival but somatic. I am recording the feeling of the place, its light, its silence, its residue.  I am not trying to make intimate one particular death, but attempting to reveal the specter of lost futures. I photograph only fragments of sites; the corner of a building, the tops of trees, a bench, a warning sign, etc.

The process creates fragmentation of the image's formal collage qualities - its ghostliness, its textures, its composition. Hopefully, the viewer can sense the layers: the geographic layer of the site, the photographic layer of the source, the textured, abstract layer of the inked monotype.
